I'll jump in here. The sprag and the ramp/ roller both serve as a one way clutch to stop the planetary carrier from counter-rotating in 'TA'. Aftermarket suppliers have designed a sprag to replace tha ramp and roller setup on non hydraulic TA's which would include your 656. All hydraulic TA's (starting with the 706/806) use a sprag for the same purpose as the ramp & rollers in the old style TA's. The high side clutch pack replaces the dry TA clutch in the old style, and the low side clutch pack was added specifically to prevent freewheeling. In the event of a sprag failure in a hyd. TA, the low side clutch pack will also fail shortly because it is not designed to carry full engine HP, just prevent freewheeling.
