Farmal H electrical problem

My son and I are trying to get a 1948 H running. On top of the magneto the previous owner has mounted a car type coil. The negative lead from the coil goes to the pull out magneto switch knob and the positive lead goes to a stud on the distributer. Cranking by hand (battery is dead) we get no spark. It is a 6 volt system. We are new to working on tractors and mostly ignorant about the electrical system. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
