Dave, sorry about this,I just found the book I needed to see that reverse idler gear. You very well may have a worn out bushing in that gear, and or shaft. It sits off to the side in transmission case. That would give an awful lot of racket if the gear is slopping around in there. When you shift your other gear into it, it is trying to keep it in place, consequently the noise you are hearing, as this would be the only time that gear is running. Hope that helps.
