It's probably a good idea to replace your wiring at this point. Once the insulation starts cracking, the wire inside starts to corrode, destroying the wire. Also, if you get an arc thru a crack, the insulation can carbonize, setting up current paths to ground which get worse with time. When you install the new wiring, make sure you get all connections CLEAN and tight.
