John - Electrically, alternator doesn't care which way it turns - will generate electricity fine spinning either direction. However nearly all alternator fans are designed/optimized for CW (clockwise) rotation - to match the rotation of virtually all modern engines. But a CW fan WILL still pull air cooling thru the alternator when spun CCW (backward) - it just won't be quite as efficient. There do exist cooling fans for CCW rotation. They are found on certain marine, light aircraft and small Detroit Diesel applications. Problem is finding one. Also straight blade, "universal" or "dual rotation" alternator fans exist - these work equally well in either direction. For the typical tractor 12 volt conversion, reverse rotation of the alternator is acceptable - the alternator is so lightly loaded the modest reduction in cooling air by it's spinning the "wrong" way will not a problem. I'd go ahead and use your alterator as is. ...Bob M

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
