I was in the same boat as you 2 months ago. I, too, scanned the internet looking here and there getting a feel for prices, equipment, problems and deals. I think if you really want a loader you have to stay away from the Ford N series. Get something with live PTO and good hydraulics. Ford has some that fall in this category like the 600 series, 800 series and even bigger 900 series. Stay away from the Ford Select O Speed, that would be any number series tractor with a 7 in it. 670, 671 870, 871. It is expensive to fix if it fails. I looked at several while trying to keep the price down. It would be easy to find one if I wanted to spend $10,000, but I capped myself at $5000. I looked at an Oliver 550 with loader, clutch was going out. I looked at several IH 300, 330 and 350 utility models, either the steering was out or price was too high. remember it had to have a loader, I didn't want to add one later. Deere has nice older units 1030, 2010, not many had wide front and most were tall, not short utility model. I settled on a IH 460 utility, 48 horsepower, nice IH 2000 loader, fasthitch with adapter to make it 3 Pt. All new rubber and wheels, $4500. It still needed some things done to it. Radiator popped a leaked, needs a oil filter spin on adapter, canister type leaks like a sieve. But it works great. The live PTO and hydraulics will cost you more. If you desire these features, (at least in Iowa) you'll have to pay what I did. If you want to pay half of that then you are in the Ford N series or old Allis WD series price range. The Ford N are good for pulling a small plow, blade or mower, But that is it. The loaders are usually trip type or they don't have any down force on the bucket.
