u 300 carburetor fittings

I have my carb rebuilt, repainted, and ready to reinstall. However, I stripped the brass fitting which goes into the carb from the fuel line.
I have been to 3 different stores to find a 5/16 male and was able to get one.
When I went to install it, it would not thread in.
Is there a different type with the same diameter for machinery and for regular plumbing, or does someone know something I might do to get it to go?
