Whether you use an original generator or adapt one to fit depends on how much originality means to you. Anything that puts out 6 volts and fits would work.
You shouldn't have much trouble finding an original type though, the same generator was used on A's, B's, BN's, AV's, Super A's, C's and probably others too. Delco-Remy made them for many cars, trucks and tractors and I'll bet a lot of them are interchangable.
