You can't depend on a resistor to limit the amount of charge. This is because the current demand (or resistance) of the battery will change as the battery charges. The best you can hope to do is put two 6 volt batteries in series and charge them with a 12 volt charger. Even with this, your won't get a consistent charge to the battery, as the two batteries probably won't have identical characteristics. Perhaps the best thing to do is look for an old 6/12 volt charger.
