Answers to some of your questions. I also have a 49 C with a M/S carb. I had fits with mine a couple years ago and it had similar symptoms as you have stated. It turned out it was the coil. I had the original one and was so weak, it wouldn't light up a timing light. That's how I found the problem by the way. Give that a try if you already haven't. On the pump seal. I replaced mine too. Went well and has not had any more problems. Your gears and pump end plates might have enough wear that all pressurized oil is pushing your seal out. You might have to invest in a new or find another pump and rebuild it. As far as a B being rare, I think all early Farmalls are getting rarer by the day. With all the city folks getting into tractors as a hobby. This has not only made new resto parts available, good thing, but has made some of them so outrageous that the rest of us would never buy them anyway, bad thing. I saw O.E.M Tractor Parts and Penfield on Friday. They have a repo radiator grill shell. $785 for a C. I have bought whole tractors before for less than that. So the short answer to your final question is YES they are all getting rarer.

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
