IH 300 Utility Transmission

I have found an IH 300 utility. TA is out, at least it makes a high pitch whine/whistle when engaged. The transmission, however is very difficult to shift. The gears will not stop rotating when the clutch is depressed to let you get it in gear. Once it is in gear, the clutch appears to function fine. Any suggestions on what might be going on? Also, previous owner filled transmission case with automotive transmission fluid, which has been drained back out, however the front transmission joints are seeping oil now. Think that this may have something to do with it? Thanks.
