Are you referring to the ballast resistor used with the coil on older cars? That works for a 6 volt coil, but I wouldn't advise using this resistor for anything else. As said by BobM, you must size the resistor to the application. The resistors for a coil were designed fo a constant load. They are usually about 1.5 ohms. A fan motor or other things like that won't draw a constant load. And remember, the resistor dissipates half the load of whatever item that you are using is rated at. Example: You have a 100 watt fan motor. This means that in addition to knowing the proper value of the resistor, you also need the proper wattage. A 50 watt resistor is no small resistor. And they aint cheap either. Best bet is to convert to 12 volts whatever you want to run.
