Sounds like you had a close one, glad no one was hurt. My $.02 is that the old caps are just as safe as the new ones IF they fit right and you keep the vent clean. The safety caps only protect you from taking the cap completely off in one twist--sort of like a radiator cap... The vent on the 424 plugged not long ago, and I didn't realize it-tractor got to running rough and so I stopped to check the gas, loud WHOOSH when I opened the safety cap the first notch. I now try to check the vent on the cap every time I fill up. Al
