Scott,
The S/N plate on CUBs is on the front casting next to where the steering shaft enters the casting. To check the oil on most IHC tractors of that vintage, there are two petcocks on the side of the oil pan. Fill till oil just starts to ooze out the top petcock. If oil doesen't come out the top one, open the bottom one. If oil doesen't come out the bottom one, close it and open the top one and fill till it just starts to come out. (If oil doesen't come out the bottom one, I would do an oil change).
The engine S/N is on the carb side of the engine to the right of the carb. This might give you an idea of when the tractor was built unless the engine has been replaced. A lot of CUBs no longer have their S/N plate since the front casting is part of the radiator. An unexpected freeze without antifreeze in the cooling system would crack these castings and they would be replaced, taking the S/N tag to the dump with them.

Good luck,
Phil

As I grew older (7), it was the thrill of my day to ride or drive on the tractor. My Papaw had a 1954 IH Super A that he bought to replace a Cub. My Papaw raised "baccer" (tobacco) and corn with the Super A, but the fondest memory was of the sawmill. He owned a small sawmill for sawing "baccer" sticks. The Super A was the powerplant. When I was old enough (7 or 8), I would get up early and be dressed to ... [Read Article]
