Apologize for getting off the topic..this is not IH, not even about tractors.

I'm trying to trouble shoot a friend's boat engine, which is a single cylinder yanmar diesel. It starts right up but won't hold a steady speed: the engine races, slows, races, slows, and finally stalls. The engine was re-built not too long ago and has only a few hours on it since then. It had run out of fuel once. I re-filled the tank, and bled the injector and fuel line of air before starting.

Any pointers on what is wrong or a link to a better on-topic website I could ask this question?

If we can't fix it I'll put it on a trailer and tow it around with my tractor to make-believe we're sailing.
