I'd talk to them at where you bought the muffler about the paint problem. I've got about 5 hrs. on a freshly rebuilt H. I get just a puff at start up but she runs clean after that. I haven't worked this tractor either. I live in the city and don't know how i'm gonna work it. Breaking it in some more will probably cure the smoke but i'm no expert and will be watching to see what other ideas the guys (and/or gals)have to say. Good Luck
