What model of IH is this, The number series tractors out of 50s have a knocking sound at low idle. I had a 300 from time it was new. Dealer said it was internal drive shaft for IPTO. Mine did it for 32 years, now has a new owner so probably still does same. There is a shaft 1 foot long coupling pto unit to power source. Splined on both ends same spline as pto. Two couplers about 3" long at each end. These just slide together, no set screws, etc., just held by pto unit. This I believe is your knocking sound Shifting 4 to 5, if it has TA and TA and clutch are out of adjustment, that won't help. You should be able to shift 4 to 5 by throttling back as you shift so as to align your gears. As you shift try poping clutch out and back in quickly when tractor is in neutral. This will help align gears for 5th gear. Get a guy that drives a highway tractor, ask him to show you double clutching. That is what I am trying to describe.
