RC: I might be able to help your research of the MD. We bought the 6th one built. All of the first 6 were sent to DesMoines,Iowa. We went down and took delivery about March 1941. I remember that we had a rep at the factory we could write or call as IHC wanted feedback as to how it was working out. There were no decals or writing on the hood where the words McCormick-Deering normally went. I'll guess that since the diesel hood is different from a gas hood, it missed getting the decals. Also different was the label "DIESEL" on the fuel tank. Someone hand painted the word DIESEL in about 5inch high letters on both sides of the tank. Can't have everything perfect on the first few built? This MD,along with a full set of implements, was purchased by my father Henry and his brother Emil for use on both of their family cornbelt farms along with custom work on the side. My father, Henry, was the type you did not stand infront of. You worked or you left the area. That is the way he treated that new MD. It was doing all the heavy work on either farm or it was hired out to another farmer on the waiting list for custom work. This MD was worked most of times 6 and 7 days a week and often 10 hours a day summer AND winter. In Winter he used a mounted picker or loader for custom work. Farmers often picked standing ear corn through the Winter.(NOT like now) There was very little trouble with it. Henry had diesel engine training befor buying it. It NEVER had a cracked head. The only major problem I remember was throwing a rod while plowing in the mid 1940's. Starting everyday all winter here in S.W. Minnesota was not a problem at all. My father forced this tractor to work so much that he often stated that just the money from custom work during the first 5 years payed for the whole family farm. It was worked probably 350 days each year during all of WW2. It was a very expensive tractor at that time but I can't imagine getting any better QUALITY from anything else. This MD was truly a great machine.. Please check this URL. www.geocites.com/Heartland/Fields/3614/diesel.html It is a diagram of the basic IHC gas\diesel. Hope this helps. Harvey

The Day Tractor Lovers Dream About - by Angus Crawford. The day started at five o'clock on the morning of Friday, the January 29, 1999. My father, my sister, my uncle, my cousin and myself all climbed into my uncle's Toyota van. It was six thirty in the morning and we had a long day ahead. We traveled for six and a half hours to our destination - a little country town with a population of no more then one hundred and fifty people (57 of them being children under the age of thirteen). We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one
