Farmall Cub rear main seal

I just did a full overhaul of a '52 cub. The rear main seal fit really loose but I gave it a shot. It is now leaking... I should have known. the dealer says that the new one is rubber replacing an unavailable steal one, and therefore will require a new seal retainer. about $150. After all the dough I have spent does anyone know of a cheaper but effective repair. For instance would roughing up the retainer(peening it )allow for enough traction to hold the seal.
