Yep, the larger PTO shaft is to meet ASAE standards. You can install a 1-3/8" PTO shaft in the tractor with the smaller one. Somewhere early in the life of the A Farmall there was a part number change of the PTO casting and maybe the belt pulley casting. Maybe your tractors cross that serial number change???? My 1942 A has the small shaft (and the later casting numbers) but I have a large shaft to install in it soon. IH offered a kit to change from the 1-1/8" PTO shaft to the 1-3/8" shaft. That kit might have included the adaptor plate (in addition to the PTO shaft) that I see on some A and B farmall tractors but I don't know for sure.
