If the clutch is properly adjusted to completely release the disk, it is going to coast for a couple of seconds, during which time the gears will clash. If you wait 5 seconds, the gears should not clash. If they do, something is binding like a pilot bearing that is not lubricated sufficiently or is too tight. I remember the old H's would do this periodically, but they had a grease fitting on the pilot bearing to solve the problem. I don't know if you have such a fitting or not. Good luck.
