Another good idea Sam, is to borrow another shift lever when doing this. I first had this happen to a Farmall 300 in mid 60s. At the time I had a relatively new 560 to use shift lever as a guide when building up. I realize that is not so easy now a days as there are no new ones around. I don't remember figures on size of shift lever end. When you take shift lever out you will see the 3 rails 1st-reverse, 2nd-3rd and 4th-5th . You have to get it so shift lever fills the notch in rail and it should be rectangular with corners very slightly rounded. In doing that your shift lever has to bring anyone of the rails to exactly neutral before it can move to next rail. Back in 60s I ignored this, shift lever end was rounded to a point, lever sliped out of 3rd position and went into 4th. Two gears at once I droped clutch, tractor stalled at full throttle. I had quite a mess inside transmission. It was expensive lesson in mid 60s, and would be even more so today. Another item to look at when you have shift lever out is slide your rails to each position, (small pry bar or large screwdriver good for this) notice if you can feel the detent ball go into place for each gear. As these tractors reach 50 years of age some of the detents on rails are wearing. Usually first indication of this is tractor popping out of gear under heavy load.
