Transmission Shim Sealing

I am restoring a Farmall B and currently have the whole transmission/differential completely apart because there were two bad bearings and all the teeth were gone on the oil slinger gear. When reassembling the differential the two flanges that hold the differential bearings have shims to make the bevel gears mesh correctly. Is there some way to seal the shims so transmission fluid doesn't leak past them? (there is no gasket) When I have done it on my other tractor rebuilds I put some non-hardening gasket cement on the shims, but is there some other way? Roger
