Pat, the crank itself should be just that--straight, then a right angle to take it over about 6-8", then straight again. The end that fits pulley will have a pin through it that appears as two nubs sticking out about 1/4-3/8"on each side, about 3/4" back from the end. Your pulley should not have a flat face. It will have a center hole that the shaft of the crank fits into. The face is a challenge to describe, should have two "ramps, that look the start of two big threads. Under the high spot of each "ramp" is a rounded notch that the pin on the crank catches. This whole setup lets the engine spin when it starts without taking the crank with it. The "ramps force the pin forward to disengage, so the starter (that would be you) doesn't begin to spin at a governed speed of 1800rpm. The crank is pretty basi. If there's no place for it to catch, I'd agree with the other note an suspect somebody broke the old pulley gettingit off at some point and replaced it with something not made for the crank.
