Another thing you can do that works for both magnetos and distributors is to put a spark plug on the coil wire and crank the engine over. Be sure to ground the base of the spark plug to the block somewhere. The coil wire is the one that comes out of the square cap on top of the magneto. This proves the points are working (or not) and eliminates the possibility that the problem is in the distributor cap or timing of the gear drive for the rotor.
