12 volt is fine but I grew up in Carrizo Springs, 100 or so miles SW of you. Never heard of 12 volt in those days, doesn't get cold enough to need it (damp enough, maybe), in fact a crank worked fine. Do what you want, but if you use large cables and keep your system maintained, 6 volt is fine. As far as paint IH used IH 50 until 1949 or 1950 (PPG 70019, DuPont 7410). After that IH 2150 (PPG 71310, DuPont 96766). There seems to be some confusion of the exact changeover dates. IH 2150 is darker than IH 50. They both look good to me.
