hard starting 330

My IH 330 sputters and barely runs when first started. Any amount of choke or throttle advance will kill it. It evens out and runs much smoother after idling for a few minutes, but then will cough and belch black smoke the first time I try to rev up the throttle or place it under a load. After that it usually runs fine the rest of the day. Recently had a mechanic work on it (adjusted valves, timed) and it started right off when I first got it back. Any ideas what could have changed in such a short time? All ideas welcome.
