Paul's hit it on the head, Doug. The only time I know for sure I can shift without a little noise is when I'm mowing -- if the sickle is stopped, I know the tranny has, too. Without something hooked to the PTO to tell you, there's nothing to do but hold your clutch in until things have a chance to stop spinning. If it's not really bad, I wouldn't worry about it. If my truck acted like that, I'd take it up back and shoot it, but these old-timers are notorious for their protests and mysterious noises.
