Jim 'I used to work at an IH dealership and we always checked the oil pump . I recall several pumps that had severly worn splines . The hub on the crankshaft also wears I guess if you have the time it is my feeling to check it out and if everything is ok you at least have peace of mind.The other thing is that you can check is to see that the harmonic balancer is in good shape. When you put the oil pump back on the engine be sure to lube it well as I know of several occassions that the pump locked up shortly after being worked on .Good luck
