Ussually good fire wood will hold up better over time then poor wood. Lighter, softer woods will deteriorate faster than your denser, harder woods in other words. Sheltered from rain will help on the rotting but like with a tarp, what is on the ground will more than likely be damp and wet most of the time. And then there is the bug problem. Not sure if keeping it dry would help there. Ussually firewood piles are good for drawing bugs, mice, and snakes. Termites can do alot of damage to wood pile. I would recommend storing it away from any buildings if storing it outside. No need to have those termites and mice moving out of the wood pile and into the house or any other building. And then when you are burning it during the colder months you can keep a few days worth or like a weeks worth fairly close to where your stove is.
