I used a wood burner for several years in my basement. Also grew up with one in the 50s. Best to cover your wood to keep it dry. The plastics tarps are so cheap these days, won't cost much to cover it. Much easier to get the fire going with dry wood and helps keep the bugs and vermin out. Also,kinda hard to get a fire going when your wood pile is snow covered. You never can get all the ice and snow off and you bring the wood in, the snow melts and the wood is damp.
