Sounds like you have the common problem of the starter locking up. When things get worn in there, the starter will lock up against the ring gear occassionally. I suppose a new or rebuilt starter may be the fix. When the starter locks, you can just loosen the bolts that hold the starter to the clutch housing and wiggle the starter around and it will free it up.
