Dan, they make an electric tach that the sending unit works off the alt. You have to go to a shop that can give you a reading off of the front pulley as to how many RPM the engine is turning, at wide open RPM. then you can set it acordingly. I have on one on my deisel pickup, has 2" face and works great. The gage reads 6000 on face but my engine only turns 3010. Don't worry bout the rest.
