looking at the gears in a W30

My W30 is making a noise in the transmission - sounds to me like the sound a bolt head makes if you roll it across a table. The noise sounds like its coming from around the gears. In addition when I changed the transmission oil I had pieces of gear teeth come out so I'm thinking I have a broken gear. I haven't seen it slip in any gear but I don't pull much with it. My question can I remove the plate below the steering wheel and look at the gears? If so and one is broke can I change it from the same opening or will I have to remove the transmission cover? I've never seen underneath the top on one of these guys before.
