Melanie, The M's had a S/N prefix of FBK. If this is the prefix, it will be a '44 model. the Super M's had a S/N prefix of SM and their S/N's started at 501 and went through 52627. SM's built at Louisville had a S/N range from 500001-539464. The 400 has some vertical slots in the grille which make it easier to identify since the slots in the M/SM were all horizontal. The ending S/N for 400's is supposed to be 41485, so that's out anyway. It looks to me like your buddy has a '44 M. Phil
