There is a little ball bearing in the front of that gearbox that supports the steering shaft. That bearing is not a terribly expensive item, and it is often the cause of a lot of play in these systems. Another commonly over-looked source of play is the bearing above the engine next to the steering shaft universal joint. The joint itself should also be checked before tearing out the whole front of the tractor. Too many of those old Farmalls were seldom greased in those areas!

If you get into a total re-build and have to take the front bolster apart, BLOCK UP THE FRONT END SAFELY, leave the tractor in 1st gear, and set both brakes tight! When you get to tugging, pulling, and banging on things, you want the front of that tractor to stay where you left it!
