Sounds like a broken axle. That seems to be a common problem with the C and SC. I have replaced four or five in the last twenty years. One case actually turned out to be stripped splines in the bull gear, after I had already bought the axle, so I kept it for a spare. I have a C and two SC's, and it's mostly the C that breaks them. I think that's because I use it for snowplowing and mowing and it gets a lot of hours, and a lot of forward-reverse shuttling. As I recall it's about a day's work to change one, a little less if you have help or a good way to handle the tire and wheel. Make sure you get any broken pieces out of the gearcase, they make an awful noise when they go through between the bull gear and the case, or worse, get carried around the bull gear and go through between it and the pinion.

It was the only
