Tachs are real nice for watching your engine speed while doing fieldwork, so that you can monitor things better. And know if you need to downshift bad. And it also helps to get the right PTO speed and stuff. And they are handy for getting the carb set right. And yet another thing, a lot of them show you your ground speed (at least on older Farmalls, the number series like 300-806 and maybe higher). Hope that sort of answers why a person would want a tach on a working tractor.
