Leaking rear seal on a C

My C, which I have had for 20+ years recently started to ooze an oil like substance out of the left rear axel seal that is dripping on the floor. Not much, but how is this happening? I know the level in the tranny is right and I haven't lubed the zerk for a year or two? Just curious as to where enough pressure is coming from to push this out. Any ideas?
