Farmall Cub Next? engine advice needed

I've got a chance to by a Cub cheap ( under 700.00) thought it may be a good winter project. The man bought it, motor was stuck, no carb or gov. Motor is now free carb on & gov. He has never tried to start it only roll it over by hand.He said it sounds like maybe a bad rod, never tried it myself. Tin is better tahn fair. Am I asking for trouble, or is it good potential? How avalible are the parts if I need to tear into the engine. Thanks
