A friend has a mid 50's Farmall, still all original 6V system. He is not mechanically inclined, so I am looking into it for him. His coil is getting very hot after running a while. The tractor sputters and dies, then won't restart until cool. He has replaced the coil, same problem. It is a generator system, and doesn't charge well. He keeps a battery charger on it between mowings. I put on new points, rotor, condensor and set the timing. What could be the culprit? Is there a resistance wire to the coil primary side? He did admit to having replaced the wire to the coil. Could the charging system be at fault, i.e. voltage regulator? I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated, ideas on what to check, etc. He doesn't want to convert to a 12V system.
