6 or 12 on SMTA?

Have a '54 SMTA that has been sitting and forgot what voltage the battery was. Thought it was a 12 volt, so put one in and it started and run for 5 minutes. Died, checked gas - OK -, but won't start. It has a generator, so must be a 6v. What could I have hurt if anything? Thanks.
