Your approach is very good, We now have vast acerage of no-till corn and soybeans. On most of the North American continant, grass grows naturally and especially good when grazed or mowed. If you find you have some spots of contrary weeds, spot spray roundup with a hand sprayer or just use a bucket with a sponge mop. During first rain shower after weeds die spread some grass seed on patch. Tillage with tractors while it may seem great is a pain in small fields, what with plow dead furrows, turning points, etc. Often non pro plowman will end up with field rougher than when they began. Don't laugh at the hogs and chain harrow idea, it works. Once had a neighbour call me could I plow up an reseed his back 2.5 acres. I got there to find he had plowed it several years before and not very well. His plow was not adjusted well, some furrows were turned, others not. Farmall SA would hardly get through some of the holes. I suggested plowing then just discing for a year, then I would grow turnips for a year, then seed grass. This fellow was a retired military man. I proceeded to plow over his seven year old plowing, all the time plowing in such a way as to fill holes. Was a tough job. When I finished plowing I joined he and his wife on patio. I advised his wife that it is fine to mold our plowshares into swords and give to a soldier, but when we mold the swords back into plowshares we should not give them back to a military man. She found this very amusing, he kind of grunted.
