MW 9 speed

Guys,
I was looking at a Farmall H a while back with an auxillary trans. mounted in front of the normal trans. It had a cable running up to the steering post. The owner told me it was an M&W 9 speed. My question is this. If the M&W is a 2 speed auxillary and the H has a 5 speed regular trans, how is it a 9 speed and not a 10 speed? Am I wrong in understanding that the M&W is a 2 speed unit? What am I missing here? Also, how dependable is the M&W unit and how available are parts for it? Thanks for your input.
