Serial Number Dilemma

I need help in figuring out the serial number for my Farmall 504. I bought it at an auction sale and it had been repainted sometime in the past. They painted right over the serial number plate with heavy paint, and I cannot identify anything on the plate. Any advice for how I locate the serial number of the tractor? Do I try to scrape off the paint? IF so, how and with what? Is there any other source of serial number on the tractor? I would just like to know when it was built. There is an interesting article about the 504 in the latest Red Power. Thanks for any advice you may have.
