I don't think the likelyhood of broke bales is any higher with a selfpowered baler if you keep it in good shape. Old junk will produce junk work but thats universal.
Theres a fellow where my parents live that bales about 10 acres with an H and an NH square baler and he seems to get on alright.
Make sure its dry enough, make sure your windrows aren't huge, you'll be okay.

This could be an EXCELLENT reason to get another tractor though. Remember the pain of switching implements too!
