The other suggestions are good and the place to start. I completely rebuilt my 45 A steering. After the nut checking. You can pull the steering shaft after taking the steering wheel off, through the front of the steering gear housing where the large plug is. You'll get a good idea of the condition of the sector gear condition by looking at the wear on the worm gear. My play was from within the gear box in the sector shaft and the lower insert bearing. I had the shaft re-built and a new insert bearing and I now have only the "slop" created by the worn ball joints, about one inch of movement of the steering wheel. Now that rebuilt ball joints are available, I may take the last step. Its not a bad job to do and not terrible expensive, but very rewarding.
