Steering on Farmall 504

I recently purchased a 504. The steering is really lose.I have replaced all the universal joints in the shaft with little relief. There is two things that i have noticed, 1) where the shaft goes into the steering column there is a lot of play where the universal joint attaches to the rod which attaches to the steering wheel. Is this normal? 2) I have a lot of play in the gear box on the front axel. Can this be adjusted and how? As for the steering column, how does the shaft come out? Will it slide out after removal of the steering wheel? Thanks for any help!
