Hydraulic Pressure Gauge Questions

I'd like to get a hydraulic pressure gauge setup to test my 300 Utility and other tractors. Do I need to set up something as is shown in the I&T manual (gauge with shut off valve), or will a gauge suffice? What have others done? I was thinking of getting a gauge through Northern Tools, etc., and then using standard fittings and hose to complete the setup.

Also, for testing a 300U, should I be connecting the gauge setup into the plug hole on the control/relief valve as suggested, or is there somewhere else?
