Sounds like it would work like a charm, to me. Ya probably gotta be careful & not "rod" it too hard, as the old fire trucks in our area are all geared w/really low speed rear ends. (Dad was on rural fire board for years & they always bought 'em for pullin' power, not speed.) I'd suggest ya put a tack in it, if it doesn't already have one & plan on taking lotsa time to get where ever you plan on going. It might have a governor, both Chev & GMC put them on trucks in that era. I'll bet the PTO that runs the pumps will run either a winch or a pump for a hoist to tilt the bed, or maybe both! My FIL did commercial trucking w/a '51 (180, I think) for lots of years-hauled both livestock & grain. It would haul 200 bu corn-thats about 6T. It would "swallow" a valve once in a while, until he eventually changed all the valves to a newer type. Sounds like a great find! (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
